Airports are places of rules. Security is important, and people have to do as they’re told. But an airport in New Zealand has announced a new rule that you may not have seen anywhere else in the world.
Dunedin Airport has put up signs that limit how long people can hug when they're dropping off friends or family at the airport. The signs say: “Max hug time 3 minutes.” Below a picture of two people hugging, the signs add: “For fonder farewells (深情告别) please use the car park.” That means, if you need to spend a lot of time saying goodbye and hugging, you shouldn’t use the drop-off area — go to the parking area instead. The idea is to make sure that cars keep moving through the drop-off area, and that people don't slow things down with extra-long hugs!
The airport’s CEO, Dan De Bono, said that some people have been taking too long to say goodbye, adding, “There’s no space left for others.” He also joked that there won’t actually be any “hug police” timing how long people hug, but the signs are there to encourage people not to spend too long hugging.
On social media, not everyone was happy with the new signs. “You can’t put a time limit on hugs!” wrote one person. However, others said it was a good idea that should be used in other airports — and even at schools.
(1) What is the new rule announced by Dunedin Airport?
A. Hugging is not permitted in the drop-off area.
B. People must park their cars in the appointed area.
C. Hugging in the drop-off area is limited to 3 minutes.
D. Only family members can hug in the drop-off area.
(2) Why did the airport make such a rule?
A. To ensure the drop-off area runs efficiently.
B. To encourage more people to use the car park.
C. To prevent people from staying in the airport for too long.
D. To avoid conflicts between people waiting to hug.
(3) What can be inferred about Dan De Bono’s attitude to the rule?
A. He hopes people will follow it voluntarily.
B. He believes the “hug police” are necessary.
C. He thinks the rule is unnecessary but people have to follow it.
D. He is strict and will punish those who break it.
(4) What is the public’s reaction to the new rule?
A. All people support it and suggest using it elsewhere.
B. Most people are against it and think it’s unreasonable.
C. People don’t care about it at all.
D. Some are unhappy while others consider it a good idea.
(5) What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How airports around the world manage the drop-off areas.
B. A new rule limiting hug time at Dunedin Airport and related responses.
C. The debate on whether rules should control people's emotions.
D. Why people should not spend too much time hugging in public.
